On August 13, 1939, a Pan American Airways Sikorsky S43 flying boat, registration NC 16933, crashed into a caisson in the harbor at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during its landing approach. The accident destroyed the aircraft and resulted in fatal injuries to 14 of the 16 people aboard. Two passengers survived, one with serious injuries and one with minor injuries.
