On October 30, 1941, at approximately 10 10 pm, American Airlines Flight 1 crashed near St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada. The Douglas DC-3, registration NC 25663, was destroyed by the impact and subsequent fire. The 17 passengers and crew of three sustained fatal injuries.

Flight 1 was a scheduled passenger service from New York, New York, to Chicago, Illinois, with intermediate stops including Newark, New Jersey; Buffalo, New York; Detroit, Michigan; and South Bend, Indiana.

During its descent the airplane apparently was partially but not completely out of control. There was no fire in or about the airplane prior to impact. No evidence of sabotage was discovered. There was no power plant failure prior to the accident, and the engines were functioning normally at the time the airplane struck the ground. Full accident record
