On August 8, 1944, at about 1:20 p.m. Eastern War Time, Pan American Airways Flight 218 crashed during an attempted take-off in Nipe Bay, approximately half a mile southeast of Antilla, Cuba. The aircraft, a Sikorsky S-42 flying boat, bounced three times before striking the water violently. Of the 31 people aboard, 17 passengers were killed. Nine passengers and all five crew members survived.
