American Airlines is flying a redesigned cabin on its Boeing 787-9 that narrows the comfort gap between premium economy and business class on long-haul routes. The new premium economy seats cost about twice coach, according to a Simple Flying report, but the product is good enough that paying thousands more for a lie-flat business class seat is harder to justify. That leaves the carrier with a commercial problem on its flagship transatlantic services, where the better mid-tier option could pull demand away from the premium cabin.
