American Airlines passenger restrained with tape after midair assault
A passenger on an American Airlines flight from Dallas to Newark became violent, choking and biting fellow travelers before being restrained with zip ties and tape, prompting a diversion to Baltimore.
A passenger aboard American Airlines flight AA618 from Dallas to Newark on September 3 became violent mid-flight, choking his seatmate and biting another passenger who intervened. The man, seated in business class on the Boeing 737-800, also shouted racist and homophobic abuse at a flight attendant, according to the report. Fellow passengers first secured his wrists with zip ties, then used tape to immobilize him, taking care to leave his mouth and nose clear for breathing.
The aircraft diverted to Baltimore, where the passenger was handed over to police. The flight later continued to Newark.
American Airlines includes tape as part of its restraint kits, which crews can use to secure violent passengers. There is no uniform US regulation on passenger restraint, and each airline sets its own rules.
