American chosen as anchor airline for planned Phoenix Sky Harbor West Terminal
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has picked American Airlines as the primary carrier for its planned West Terminal, a facility intended mainly for international traffic. The terminal remains in planning, with construction not expected before the end of the decade.
American Airlines has been selected as the main tenant for a new West Terminal at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, the city's Aviation Department said Monday. The carrier was chosen after months of review, according to the department. American currently flies out of Terminal 4.
The West Terminal was first announced two years ago. Airport leaders have described it as Phoenix's gateway for a growing volume of international flights. It would be the first new terminal at the airport since Terminal 4 opened in 1990.
Planning is not complete. No designs have been made public, and the number of gates has yet to be settled. Officials said procurement for the project is expected to start next year. Construction could begin in late 2029, with an opening possible in late 2033.
American is already the busiest carrier at Phoenix measured by passengers, with more than 40% of traffic. Chief executive Robert Isom said in a release that the airport is a key part of the airline's network and that the carrier is pleased to keep investing in the area. He said the project would add jobs, expand global connections and provide new premium space for customers.
