Boeing is working to regain a backlog position in China that it lost years ago. According to US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, about 150 of 200 Boeing commitment slots are now moving through formalisation, a figure confirmed on September 21, 2026.

The planned mix combines domestic Boeing 737 MAX narrowbodies with Boeing 787 aircraft for international routes. Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg said the individual Chinese carriers will announce their own allocations when they choose, rather than issuing one joint statement.

Airbus, meanwhile, has spent months locking in nearly 200 firm Airbus A320neo orders across Air China, China Southern and Xiamen Airlines. That confirmed backlog leaves Boeing still trailing its rival in the Chinese market as of 2026.
