Catania Airport shut again as volcanic ash returns
Catania airport was closed again on Tuesday morning after reopening the previous evening, with ash from Mount Etna forcing a fresh halt to flights.
Volcanic ash closed Catania airport again on the morning of Tuesday, 29 September, only hours after flights had restarted.
Arrivals and departures resumed on Monday, 28 September at around 19.15 local time, earlier than planned. Conditions worsened overnight, forcing another closure on Tuesday morning.
The airport says ash concentrations in the atmosphere and wind direction determine when flights can resume. The situation was to be assessed again over the coming hours.
Activity at Mount Etna had already caused repeated closures, cancellations and schedule changes at Catania in the preceding days.
