Delta flight diverts to Honolulu after fumes reported in cabin

A Delta Air Lines flight diverted to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu on Saturday after fumes were observed in the cabin, the airline said. The Airbus A321neo had departed Kahului Airport in Maui and landed in Honolulu just under an hour later.

Four people received medical treatment. Emergency medical personnel responded after some on board reported headaches and nausea. Three were taken to a hospital; a fourth was treated at the airport.

Delta said the flight crew followed procedures in diverting once the fumes were observed after departure from Maui. "Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people," the airline said in a statement, adding that it was contacting customers to apologize and would refund their airfare.

Passengers left the aircraft by stairs and were bused to the terminal. Delta technicians will evaluate the airplane.
