DHL-operated Boeing 737 freighter suffers brake fire landing at Los Angeles
A Boeing 737-800 freighter flown for DHL by Kalitta Air caught fire in its right main landing gear while landing at Los Angeles International Airport, after the pilot reported locked brakes.
A Boeing 737-800BDSF cargo aircraft flying for DHL caught fire in its right main landing gear while landing at Los Angeles International Airport on the evening of August 26. The aircraft, registered N326FL and operated by Kalitta Air, arrived as flight KFS1814 from Phoenix at around 11pm local time.
Video footage of the landing showed sparks, then flames, emerging from beneath the aircraft as it touched down. According to radio traffic, the pilot reported that the brakes had locked.
Emergency crews put out the fire. A runway was temporarily closed as a result. At least four tires on the rear landing gear sustained heavy damage, though no injuries were reported.
The precise cause of the incident has not yet been determined.
