Discover Airlines adds fuel stops in Luanda on Windhoek route
Fuel rationing at Windhoek's airport has forced Discover Airlines to make technical stopovers in Luanda on flights to Frankfurt.
Discover Airlines has added refuelling stops in Luanda, Angola, on flights between Windhoek and Frankfurt. The change affects flight 4Y133, flown with Airbus A330-300 aircraft.
On Wednesday and Thursday, two A330-300s registered D-AIKI and D-AIKE each made a roughly two-hour technical stop in Luanda before continuing on to Frankfurt, according to a report cited by the airline industry outlet that first flagged the disruption.
Media reports point to a shortage of jet fuel deliveries from Gulf states to Namibia as the cause. Windhoek's airport has reportedly begun rationing fuel for international flights, and carriers such as Discover have adjusted their operations so aircraft can complete the long-haul leg back to Europe.
How long the shortage will last is not clear from available information, nor is it known whether other airlines serving Windhoek have been affected in the same way. Discover Airlines has not issued a detailed public statement beyond confirming the operational change already reported in the press.
The stopovers add flight time for passengers travelling between Namibia and Germany, but they do not appear to have caused any cancellations so far. Windhoek's Hosea Kutako International Airport is the main gateway for international air traffic into Namibia. If the fuel shortage continues, it could have broader consequences for other carriers flying similar long-haul routes through the airport.
