Dnata expands accessible travel services at Dubai airport and tests autonomous wheelchairs

The ground handler has added boarding lifts, electric vehicles and powered wheelchair sets for passengers needing mobility assistance at Dubai International, and is trialling self-driving wheelchairs.

Dnata is expanding its assistance for passengers with reduced mobility at Dubai International, the ground handler said. It has taken delivery of three new lifting vehicles for boarding and disembarking aircraft, 24 specially adapted electric carts and three sets of battery-powered wheelchairs. The handler is also testing wheelchairs that drive themselves.

According to the company, it supports around two million travellers a year at Dubai International who need mobility or other accessibility assistance. More than 3,500 of its employees have completed training on assisting people with non-visible disabilities.

Dnata has renamed its former Special Handling unit Accessible Travel, a change it says reflects the broader range of accessible services now on offer.
