EASA advises airlines to avoid parts of Saudi airspace

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency is warning carriers about flying over parts of Saudi Arabia, citing the threat from Houthi missile attacks from Yemen. A pilots' group has issued similar advice.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency has told airlines to avoid parts of Saudi Arabian airspace, citing the threat of missile attacks from the Houthi militia in Yemen. The warning was tightened after recent attacks on Saudi airports. Media reports say three people were killed, including a pilot at Riyadh airport.

Opsgroup, a pilots' group with around 10,000 members, has also warned against flying over Saudi Arabia. It cites Saudi air defence as a further risk on top of the missiles.

EASA's recommendations are not binding, but they can carry legal consequences for airlines on insurance.
