Goodyear Zeppelin NT airship makes scenic flights over London

A Goodyear Zeppelin NT airship spent two weeks flying sightseeing routes over central London, offering passengers low-altitude views of city landmarks.

A Goodyear Zeppelin NT airship completed a series of scenic flights over London in July, operating from Damyns Hall Aerodrome north of the city for roughly two weeks. The aircraft, which is normally based at Lake Constance in southern Germany, reached Britain by crossing the English Channel via Calais and passing the White Cliffs of Dover before continuing on to London.

According to an account from a passenger who is also an aviation journalist, the airship cruised at about 1,000 feet and roughly 35 knots, following the River Thames past landmarks including Tower Bridge, the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and Buckingham Palace, with one flight timed to coincide with the Changing of the Guard ceremony. The passenger described the slow-moving airship as drawing attention both from those aboard and from people on the ground watching it pass overhead.

The zeppelin is powered by three Lycoming IO-360 engines and is filled with non-flammable helium. It is owned by Deutsche Zeppelin-Reederei, based in Friedrichshafen, Germany, and operated the flights on behalf of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. Each day reportedly began with the ground crew and pilot preparing the aircraft, which is moored overnight on a mast mounted on a large truck, before it was released for flight.

The visit forms part of the airship's broader use for scenic and promotional flights across Europe, offering a different type of aerial sightseeing experience compared with conventional aircraft.
