Honda Jet Echelon delayed by nearly three years

Honda Aircraft has pushed back the schedule for its Honda Jet Echelon. First flight of the business jet is now planned for 2028, with type certification and first deliveries to follow in 2031. The previous targets were 2026 or 2027 for first flight and 2028 or 2029 for certification and handover.

The manufacturer blames delays at central suppliers. Programme head Amod Kelkar acknowledged "some scheduling challenges" but pointed to continuing progress on the aircraft.

Honda Aircraft said the first wing structure for the Echelon has been built, and five complete wing structures are at various stages of final assembly. More than 70 percent of parts for the largest jet in the company's history are available, according to the manufacturer. Main assembly is due to begin early next year. One test cockpit is already in use and a second is being prepared.

Demand has not weakened, the company said. More than 530 signed letters of intent remain on the books, which Honda Aircraft described as evidence of customer confidence in the new aircraft.

Honda announced the Echelon in 2021, pitching it with single-pilot approval and a long range.
