On most commercial aircraft, the passenger in the window seat controls the shade with a simple pull-down mechanism. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner works differently.

Instead of physical blinds, the Dreamliner uses electrochromic glass, developed by Gentex together with PPG Aerospace, that dims electronically at the touch of a button. Passengers can adjust the tint level themselves during much of the flight.

Cabin crew, though, retain a master override. At certain points, such as during meal service or landing, flight attendants can lock or adjust the tint centrally, regardless of what a passenger has selected. That's different from conventional aircraft, where window shades stay under passenger control except when crew ask them to be opened or closed manually for safety reasons.

The system is presented as one of the distinguishing design features of the 787, alongside its larger windows compared with older widebody types. Because the glass darkens rather than blocks light entirely, some light can still pass through even at the darkest setting. That differs from a fully opaque pulled-down shade.

No airline or regulatory issue is mentioned in connection with the technology. The feature is simply described as a design characteristic of the aircraft type.
