IndiGo A321 tail strike on second Bengaluru landing attempt

An IndiGo Airbus A321 struck its tail on the runway while landing at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on September 27, 2026. The aircraft, an A321-252NX registered VT-IBH, was operating flight 6E6542 from Guwahati.

The crew went around after the first approach. On the second attempt, the rear fuselage touched the runway surface. IndiGo called it an "abnormal runway contact." The jet completed the landing and taxied in without anything further.

No passengers or crew were hurt. The airline said the weather at the airport was gusty at the time, though whether that played any part in the tail strike has not been established.

IndiGo removed the aircraft from service after landing and grounded it for maintenance inspections, and notified the relevant authorities as required. The airline has not said publicly whether the aircraft was damaged or how badly, and it remains unclear whether structural repairs or parts replacement will be needed.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation has opened an investigation. Investigators are expected to examine the circumstances of both approaches, the condition of the aircraft, operational data and the weather at the time.
