Indonesian Air Force Su-30 runs off runway at Makassar airport

An Indonesian Air Force Sukhoi Su-30 left the paved portion of runway 13 at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Maros, South Sulawesi, on the morning of August 24, 2026, an airport spokesperson confirmed to a local news agency. The jet came to rest on grass beside the runway.

The aircraft, carrying tail number TS-3011, stopped within view of a nearby road, and passing motorists filmed the scene before any official statement was issued. One witness told a local outlet that he saw smoke trailing the aircraft, and the outlet reported that dry grass near the site caught fire, prompting a fire response.

Airport operations were not affected. Flights continued to use the airfield's other runway, a 3,100-meter north-south strip, while the 2,500-meter runway involved in the excursion was closed for handling.

The Indonesian Air Force had not released a statement addressing the cause of the excursion, the sequence of events, or the condition of the crew as of the time of reporting.

Sultan Hasanuddin is a joint civil-military airfield hosting Air Squadron 11, which operates the Indonesian Air Force's Flanker fleet of Su-27 and Su-30 aircraft delivered between 2003 and 2013. The type remains the country's principal air defense fighter pending deliveries of Rafale jets ordered from a French manufacturer in 2022.
