Lufthansa A340-600 Declares Emergency Over UK, Diverts
A Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt to Washington declared an emergency north of the UK and is diverting, with Dublin initially indicated as the diversion airport.
A Lufthansa flight bound for Washington, D.C., declared an emergency on Thursday afternoon and turned back from its Atlantic crossing. Flight LH418, an Airbus A340-600 registered D-AIHX, left Frankfurt at 1:30 p.m. local time and climbed to 34,000 feet as it tracked northwest over the North Sea.
About two hours in, near the northern edge of the UK, the crew turned left and squawked 7700. The aircraft descended and headed south toward Ireland. Dublin Airport was initially expected to serve as the diversion location, and emergency crews there were reportedly on standby.
The airline said the aircraft could not continue across the Atlantic due to a technical issue. Later updates indicated the flight had descended to 26,000 feet and that operations were considering a different diversion airport.
