Lugano airport granted operating concession until 2056
Switzerland's federal environment, transport, energy and communications department has extended Lugano airport's operating concession by 30 years, to 15 September 2056. The city now faces decisions on urgent infrastructure work and a long-term operating model.
Lugano airport can keep operating for another three decades. The Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications has extended the concession to 15 September 2056, the airport announced.
The city of Lugano must now decide on urgent infrastructure measures and a long-term operating model for the site.
Finances improved in the first half of 2026. The airport posted an operating surplus of more than 200,000 francs, against a deficit of just under 100,000 francs a year earlier.
Flights to Geneva may return, and the matter is under discussion. A planned change in the law could, under certain conditions, allow airlines from the EU and Efta to serve domestic Swiss routes. Parliament has not finished debating that change.
