NTSB gives first briefing on fatal Miami runway overrun

The National Transportation Safety Board gave its first news briefing Monday on the fatal accident at Miami International Airport, where an Amazon Prime Air Boeing 767-33A operated by 21 Air overran Runway 30 on Sunday. NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy called the scene "utter devastation," with debris from the aircraft and two vehicles it struck spread over a wide area. She said investigators had not yet reached the aircraft because victim recovery was still going on, and the site was not completely safe. The jet overran the runway by about 1,300 feet at approximately 1:53 p.m. EDT Sunday. Local officials confirmed five people died and five were injured, three critically. The flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder were both recovered and sent to NTSB headquarters for analysis Monday evening. Homendy said the investigation will be split into teams looking at different aspects. Probable cause will not be determined while personnel remain on scene for about a week. Findings and safety recommendations will come in a final report. A second briefing is planned for Tuesday.
