56-Year-Old Douglas DC-8 Cargo Jet Overruns Runway in Kinshasa
A Douglas DC-8 freighter operated by Trans Air Cargo Service ran off the runway at N'Djili Airport in Kinshasa on September 8, collapsing its nose gear. The aircraft, serial number 46133, is 56 years old and the carrier's only plane.
A Douglas DC-8 freighter overran the runway while landing at N'Djili Airport in Kinshasa on September 8, according to the Democratic Republic of Congo's Bureau Permanent d'Enquêtes d'Accidents et Incidents d'Aviation. The nose landing gear collapsed during the accident, leaving the aircraft resting on its nose.
The aircraft, registered 9S-AJO, was built in 1971 and delivered to World Airways in the United States. It later flew for operators including DHL Airways in the U.S. and DHL Aviation in Germany during 1991–1992. Trans Air Cargo Service has operated it since 2011, and it is currently the only aircraft in that fleet.
A photo shows the collapsed nose gear. Aviation Herald and Aviation Safety Network reported the incident occurred on landing. The investigation bureau said it has dispatched a team to the site.
