Rare DC-8 freighter runs off runway at Kinshasa
A rare Douglas DC-8 freighter operated by Trans Air Cargo Service has veered off the runway at Kinshasa's N'Djili airport. The Congolese investigation authority has asked the operator to preserve the aircraft for evidence.
A Douglas DC-8 freighter operated by Trans Air Cargo Service has run off the runway at Kinshasa's N'Djili airport in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The accident occurred on 8 September, according to the country's aircraft accident investigation authority, BPEA.\n\nFew details have been disclosed about the circumstances. Images released by BPEA show the four-engined jet on rough grassland with its nose touching the ground. The nose gear either collapsed or failed to extend.\n\nThe aircraft is a DC-8-70 variant, registered 9S-AJO, powered by CFM International CFM56 engines. BPEA has advised the operator to keep the aircraft in its current state and refrain from handling or relocation until safety investigators arrive.\n\nVery few DC-8s remained in service before this accident\u2014possibly as few as two.
