A Ryanair flight from Norwich to Malta declared an emergency shortly after takeoff this morning and is diverting to Manchester, according to flight tracking data.
The aircraft, a Malta Air-registered Boeing 737 MAX 8 with registration 9H-VUV, departed Norwich Airport from runway 27 at approximately 08:30 BST. The crew stopped the climb at 7,000 feet after encountering an unspecified technical issue. Radar tracking showed the jet entering a holding pattern near the airport.
About 30 minutes into the flight, the crew transmitted squawk code 7700, the international transponder code for a general emergency. The aircraft remained at 7,000 feet while the crew worked through safety checklists, burning off fuel.
Air traffic control coordinated priority handling for the flight. Around 09:08 BST, the flight began diverting, initially heading west. By 09:14, the aircraft was holding at 6,000 feet and heading to Manchester to use a longer runway.
