NTSB Releases Flight Data from Miami 767 Runway Overrun
Recorder data shows go-around thrust was applied after touchdown before the 21 Air freighter overran a Miami runway, killing five people on the ground.

Flight recorder data from the Boeing 767 freighter that overran Runway 30 at Miami International Airport shows the throttles were advanced to go-around thrust after touchdown, according to the NTSB. Investigators said during a briefing that the brakes were released before the thrust increase, then reapplied four seconds later after throttles returned to idle. The 21 Air aircraft, operating for Amazon Prime Air from San Juan, struck two vehicles after leaving the runway and killed five people on the ground.
The nose gear and right main gear first contacted the runway at 158 knots, with braking beginning seven seconds later at 146 knots. The left main gear touched down at 134 knots. At 120 knots, brakes were released and throttles increased to go-around thrust. Four seconds later, throttles were idle and brakes reapplied at 117 knots.
No deployment of speed brakes or thrust reversers was recorded. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy declined to characterize the findings until an aircraft performance study is complete.
A witness told CBS News that a pilot said, "My career is over" after escaping, and was shaking with injuries to his forehead and hand. CBS identified the captain and first officer, both treated and released. The captain had received his 767 type rating in May and reported 7,145 flight hours on his latest medical application. Crew interviews are underway.
