Red Wings Superjet 100 catches fire during oxygen refilling at Yekaterinburg
A Red Wings Yakovlev Superjet 100 caught fire at Yekaterinburg airport while a technician filled an oxygen bottle, injuring the worker and damaging the aircraft. The Russian aviation authority has opened an investigation.
A Yakovlev Superjet 100 operated by Red Wings caught fire at Yekaterinburg airport while the aircraft was being prepared for a flight to Magnitogorsk, according to an account carried by the channel Aviatorshina.
The fire broke out in the avionics bay area as a technician was filling an oxygen bottle for the crew. The technician was hurt and taken to hospital. The four crew members left the aircraft uninjured, and no passengers were on board at the time.
Firefighters put out the blaze. The aircraft, registration RA-89144, was damaged and has been taken out of service for the time being. Passengers departed about four hours later on a replacement aircraft.
Russia's aviation authority has opened an investigation. The cause of the fire has not yet been established.
