Typhoon Dujuan forces Japan Airlines and ANA to cancel 275 flights

Typhoon Dujuan brought major disruption to air travel in Japan on Monday, as Japan Airlines cancelled 135 flights and All Nippon Airways cancelled another 140, according to the carriers.

The storm passed roughly 130 kilometres south of Katsuura, near Tokyo, with wind speeds of about 144 kilometres per hour. Rail services were also affected, with connections suspended on several lines.

More than 1.6 million people in and around Tokyo were urged to leave their homes, though the evacuations were not mandatory. Japan's weather agency warned of continued heavy rain and possible landslides. In some areas, rainfall through Tuesday could exceed the average total for the whole of September.

More than 9,000 households near Tokyo lost power, one person sustained minor injuries, and nine houses were damaged.
