Russia orders checks on PS-90 engines after repair defect risk

Rosaviatsiya has ordered unscheduled inspections of 53 Aviadvigatel PS-90 engines after concerns that retaining pins could come loose following substandard repairs.

Russia's aviation regulator Rosaviatsiya has ordered unscheduled inspections of 53 engines from the Aviadvigatel PS-90 family, aeroTELEGRAPH reports. The checks cover 29 aircraft: Ilyushin Il-76 and Il-96 freighters and passenger planes, plus Tupolev Tu-204 and Tu-214 jets.

The concern is that retaining pins in the low-pressure turbine area could work loose after inadequate repairs. The trigger was damage to an Aviadvigatel PS-90A-76 engine on an Il-76 operated by Volga-Dnepr in February 2026.

Engines overhauled between 2016 and 2024 that have completed more than 100 cycles may be affected. Inspections are to be carried out at the next scheduled maintenance event. If a retaining pin is missing, the engine must be taken out of service. New engines are not affected, according to the manufacturer.

Aviadvigatel is Russia's leading engine design bureau and part of the United Engine Corporation (UEC).
