Saab unveils concept for unmanned stealth combat aircraft

Saab has presented a full-scale model of an unmanned combat aircraft concept called A3-001, designed for high-risk missions alongside manned platforms.

Saab has shown a full-scale concept model of an unmanned combat aircraft at the Swedish Armed Forces Air Show, held at the Malmen air base in Linköping. The aircraft, designated A3-001, was presented as an illustration of how manned and unmanned platforms could operate together as part of an integrated air combat system.

According to Saab, the concept is meant for high-risk missions, including electronic warfare, suppression of enemy air defences, and precision strikes in heavily contested environments. The company described the design as having low observability, a reference to stealth characteristics, and pointed to its delta-wing configuration.

Saab did not disclose performance figures such as top speed. Some outlets covering the unveiling speculated that the design could indicate a supersonic capability, but the manufacturer has not confirmed this.

The A3-001 concept places Saab among several defence firms developing so-called collaborative combat aircraft: unmanned systems meant to fly in coordination with crewed fighters. Comparable programs cited alongside Saab's reveal include General Atomics' YFQ-42A, Anduril Industries' YFQ-44A, and Boeing's MQ-28.

Saab said unmanned demonstrator aircraft based on the concept could be flying before 2030. No firm program timeline or customer commitment has been announced, though. The presentation was described as a concept model rather than a flying prototype.
