Schiphol to close Buitenveldertbaan runway for annual maintenance

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport will close Runway 09/27, the Buitenveldertbaan, on weekdays between 31 August and 8 September for annual maintenance, according to the airport.

The runway will reopen for the weekend of 5–6 September, allowing normal operations to resume briefly before the closure continues into the following week.

The work covers several tasks. Crews are expected to inspect and repair the asphalt surface and runway markings, and check electrical systems and cabling used for lighting and navigation aids. Drainage systems will be cleaned, and crews will also handle grass cutting and general upkeep around the runway area.

This kind of seasonal maintenance is routine at major airports, giving staff a chance to check and repair infrastructure before demand rises. Schiphol has not said whether flight schedules will be affected during the closure. Traffic normally handled by Runway 09/27 will likely be redirected to other runways during the affected periods, though.

The airport's announcement gave no further details on cost or which contractors are involved in the work.
