South Korea's air force takes delivery of first production KF-21

The Republic of Korea Air Force has received the first production example of the Korea Aerospace Industries KF-21 Boramae fighter. The handover took place at KAI's production site in Sacheon, according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration in Seoul.

Major Han Jae-Seok flew the aircraft, carrying the tail number 001, to Yecheon air base, which is to be the first location to operate the type. Major Han said the moment he accepted the jet and started its engine brought feelings he struggled to describe. He added that the controls, developed through the efforts of many people, are now in the hands of air force pilots, and that he would work to defend the country with a strong sense of duty.

The first operational unit will be the 156th fighter squadron. It was formed in 1988 to fly the McDonnell Douglas F-4E Phantom, disbanded in 2012, and re-established this year to operate the KF-21.

Air and ground crews have been training on the type ahead of the aircraft's arrival. Once the first operational pilots are proficient, they will take on the job of instructing new pilots. In the same way, the initial group of maintainers will be responsible for training further instructors.

Long-term planning has called for the KF-21 to enter service with the air force by late 2026. The type received type certification in June after an extensive test programme, following final combat suitability certification in May. Mass production began in 2024, and KAI holds South Korean orders for 40 aircraft.
