Spain and Poland agree framework for at least seven Airbus A330 MRTT tankers

Spain's Council of Ministers has approved a framework agreement with Poland for the joint acquisition of at least seven Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport aircraft. The deal, approved on August 25, 2026, is valued at roughly €5.4 billion, or about $6.3 billion, and covers both the aircraft and the logistical support needed to bring them into service.

Poland is set to receive four of the tankers by 2030. Its participation will run through an addendum funded via the European Union's SAFE defense financing instrument, according to Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. He described the framework as covering "at least seven" aircraft and said a final agreement still needs to be signed.

The two countries signed a memorandum in late May 2026. Officials met again in June at Airbus's conversion facility in Getafe, Spain, where they said talks had moved into an implementation stage, though final aircraft numbers and production capacity remained unsettled.

Warsaw sees a dedicated tanker fleet as necessary to make full use of the range and endurance of its incoming F-35A fighters. The SAFE program can provide up to €150 billion in long-term loans for European defense purchases, with aerial refuelling capability among the eligible uses.

The new order would add to Spain's existing three-aircraft A330 MRTT fleet. Its first converted tanker joined the Spanish Air Force's 45th Wing in April 2025. It has not yet been confirmed whether the additional aircraft will be based on the established A330-200 airframe or the newer A330-800-based MRTT+ variant.
