Stuttgart Airport to expand solar power capacity

Stuttgart Airport plans to expand its solar power generation with a new photovoltaic installation west of the runway. The facility will cover about 31,000 square metres and is expected to have a capacity of roughly three megawatts.

According to the airport, the new array will be paired with an energy storage system so more of the electricity it generates can be used on site rather than fed into the wider grid. Construction is due to start in autumn, and the installation is expected to become operational in spring 2027.

Once complete, the airport's combined solar capacity will reach around six megawatts. A further ground-mounted solar installation, also fitted with storage, is planned east of the runway for 2027.

The airport said the projects are part of a broader plan to make its ground operations net greenhouse-gas neutral by 2040.
