Survey ranks air forces by size of known combat drone fleets

A ranking of the world's largest air forces by the number of known combat drones, set against the rapid growth of uncrewed aircraft and autonomous weapon systems.

Uncrewed aircraft and autonomous weapon systems have developed far more quickly in recent years than at any earlier point, according to an assessment of the world's largest air forces by known combat drone inventories.

The conflicts in Ukraine and Iran drew global attention for the success of inexpensive remotely piloted air vehicles against conventional combat planes and helicopters that cost far more and carry higher performance.

Those battlefield results, the assessment states, have pushed major powers into a new arms race over drone technology.
