Sydney Airport rolls out 50 electric buses featuring Dharawal artwork

Sydney Airport has introduced 50 electric buses, replacing the diesel vehicles that shuttle passengers and staff between landside and airside areas. The fleet carries commissioned artwork by Dharawal artist Shane Youngberry, developed with the Gujaga Foundation. The airport says the work celebrates the stories and culture of the Dharawal People of Coastal Sydney.

Australian manufacturer Bus & Coach International supplied the buses. Digital displays onboard and at bus stops will show live estimates of time-to-destination and waiting times.

The airport says the fleet advances its target of net zero carbon emissions for scope 1 and 2 by 2030. The vehicles run entirely on renewable electricity under a power purchase agreement.

Karen Tompkins, the airport's group executive for government relations, sustainability and legal, said the buses cut scope 1 emissions from operations and provide quieter, cleaner and more comfortable transport across the precinct. She said the airport was proud to display Youngberry's artwork across the fleet.

The diesel vehicles will be withdrawn progressively as the electric buses enter service.
