Portland airport completes second phase of main terminal expansion

The second and final stage of the main terminal expansion at Portland International Airport has opened, according to a project snapshot in an airport industry outlet.

Designed by ZGF for the Port of Portland, the one million square foot scheme is described as the largest public infrastructure project ever completed in Oregon and the result of a decade of planning. Its first phase opened in 2024.

The terminal has a nine-acre mass timber roof and interior landscaping meant to reflect the Pacific Northwest. Natural light runs throughout the passenger route, and the design opens views of the airfield.

The new phase adds a separate arrival experience. Exit lanes at the north and south ends of the terminal connect the concourses and lead arriving passengers down to baggage claim. Post-security gathering areas are larger, and the airport has added skylit all-user restrooms, local retail and dining outlets, and art installations.

ZGF managing partner Sharron van der Meulen said the airport was designed to meet the needs of travellers today while adapting to future demands, so that it can serve the region for decades.

Since phase one opened, the outlet reported, the terminal has received several honours, among them the Prix Versailles award for the world's most beautiful airport, a North American design distinction from Fast Company, and recognition from the Holcim Foundation for sustainable construction. The expansion doubles passenger capacity, the outlet said.
