Tracking data misidentified Polish border aircraft as French drone

Flight-tracking data circulated on social media on September 24, 2026 appeared to show a Safran Patroller surveillance drone operating along Poland's border with Belarus, near the Białowieża Forest. The listing carried no registration or operator information.

The sighting led to claims that an unidentified French surveillance drone was flying on NATO's eastern flank, a region that has drawn increased attention after a series of drone incidents, including Russian drones entering Polish airspace on September 9 and 10, 2025.

The aircraft was most likely a crewed Polish Border Guard surveillance plane rather than a French-built unmanned one. Safran based the Patroller on the Stemme S15 motor glider, and the Polish Border Guard flies crewed Stemme ASP S15-1 aircraft. Two such aircraft are in the service's aviation fleet, and the Border Guard says they have been used for border surveillance since September 2015, fitted with optoelectronic systems for long-range observation. Their duties include watching Poland's land and maritime borders and observing low-flying aircraft and other objects near the frontier.
