Trump to use gifted Boeing 747-8 for Ireland trip despite security concerns

U.S. President Donald Trump intends to use the Boeing 747-8 gifted by Qatar for a trip to Ireland in September, according to CNN. The aircraft's conversion for presidential transport is not yet finished, and sources disagree about its current security equipment. Two sources told CNN the jumbo lacks some systems present on the older VC-25A aircraft. A third source said the plane already has many of the same functions.

Trump himself stated the aircraft is extensively equipped but needs about 60 more days to be fully upgraded. A senior White House official said the 747-8 is considered safe for travel to countries like Ireland. Further security modifications are expected to begin in October.

The jet, which cost around $400 million, was earlier used as Air Force One on domestic flights. In July Trump flew it to Turkey, but reportedly left that country on a different aircraft due to security concerns. Critics continue to raise concerns about the security of the gift, conversion costs, and possible conflicts of interest. Trump has said he plans to give the aircraft to his presidential museum after leaving office.
