Turkish Aerospace adds rocket-assisted rail launch for Simsek-K UAV

Turkish Aerospace has demonstrated a rail launch with a rocket booster for its Simsek-K uncrewed aerial system, expanding the drone's deployment options beyond air-launch from larger aircraft.

Turkish Aerospace (TAI) has added a new launch method for its Simsek-K unmanned system, successfully testing a rail-based launch assisted by a rocket booster.

The Simsek-K can be used either as a one-way strike weapon or a target drone. Until now, it had only flown after being released from TAI's Anka III and Aksungur uncrewed aircraft. TAI said the rocket-assisted take-off method cuts the infrastructure normally needed to get the Simsek-K airborne, giving operators more flexibility on where and how it can be deployed.

TAI chief executive Mehmet Demiroglu said the new launch option gives Turkey's security forces greater operational reach across varied terrain. He described the development as part of the company's wider push to expand its defence offerings.

The announcement follows other recent work on related systems. In 2025, TAI's Anka III released a Super Simsek high-subsonic UAV from underwing. That aircraft went on to complete a 50-minute autonomous flight, according to the company. TAI has said the Super Simsek variant is designed to carry various payloads, including electronic-attack equipment.

TAI and Turkish rival Baykar have both continued to invest heavily in uncrewed aircraft development in recent years. Each firm regularly announces new variants and capability upgrades for its drone families.
