Turkish Airlines A350 enters active Newark runway without clearance
An Airbus A350-900 operating Turkish Airlines flight TK30 taxied onto Newark's active runway 4L on 15 September without an explicit clearance, after the crew apparently misread a controller's instruction.
An Airbus A350-900 flown by Turkish Airlines taxied onto the active runway at Newark airport on 15 September without a clearance to do so, according to an account of the occurrence.
The aircraft was operating flight TK30 to Istanbul. Air traffic control had instructed the crew to continue taxiing toward the runway, using the phrase "continue for the runway". The pilots appear to have taken that wording as permission to enter the runway itself. The tower had not issued an explicit clearance to line up.
Once the A350 was already on runway 4L, the controller noticed the error and told the crew to leave the runway. The crew was then required to write down a phone number for air traffic control.
Whether the event leads to any further consequences, or to an investigation by the US Federal Aviation Administration, is not known.
