UK CAA sets terms for independent review of NATS September disruption
The UK Civil Aviation Authority has published the terms of reference for an independent review into a NATS technical incident that disrupted thousands of flights. The review will also look at NATS modernisation plans and how the regulator oversees the air traffic provider.
The UK Civil Aviation Authority set out terms of reference on September 25 for an independent review into the NATS technical incident of September 8, 2026.
UK transport secretary Heidi Alexander requested the review after the incident. More than 2,000 flights were delayed, cancelled or diverted, according to the CAA.
NATS said in a preliminary report on September 18 that a software defect caused the incident.
The review will look at NATS modernisation plans and at the CAA's own regulatory oversight of the air traffic control provider.
