UK commits RAF Voyager refuelling aircraft to support Saudi Arabia

The United Kingdom confirmed on September 22, 2026 that it will provide a Royal Air Force (RAF) Voyager air-to-air refuelling aircraft to support Saudi Arabian defensive operations, according to the UK government. The decision followed what the government described as escalating violence in the region.

The Ministry of Defense called Saudi Arabia and Yemen "long-standing partners" and stated they play a vital role in regional stability. The move expands an existing British military contribution to air defense that already includes the deployment of equipment and personnel.

Secretary of Defense Wes Streeting said the Houthis are "a dangerous threat to regional stability," warning that a Houthi success would run against the UK's economic and security interests.

"We unequivocally condemn their attacks on Saudi Arabia," Streeting said.

The Houthi advances earlier in the month saw the rebels capture the Red Sea port city of Mocha and other stretches of Yemen's coastline. UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attacks on Saudi Arabia and the targeting of civilian sites two days before the UK announcement.

Britain's statement said escalation in the Gulf could have a "serious impact at home," listing rising prices, disruption to energy supplies, and additional costs for British businesses. It described protecting regional stability, safeguarding trade and energy supplies, and pursuing a diplomatic resolution in Yemen as matters of national interest.

The government framed the refuelling aircraft deployment as part of efforts to support partners and those same goals.
