Unidentified drones repeatedly entered airspace over Australian F-35 base
Multiple unidentified drones breached restricted airspace around RAAF Base Williamtown and adjacent Newcastle Airport over three days in July 2026, prompting a police investigation whose findings have not been disclosed.
Australian authorities have confirmed that multiple unidentified drones repeatedly entered restricted airspace over RAAF Base Williamtown and the adjoining Newcastle Airport in New South Wales between July 11 and 13, 2026, according to Australian media reports cited by an aviation news outlet. The Department of Defence acknowledged the incidents, and Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy said broad media reporting about the number of drones and the dates involved was accurate.
Williamtown is Australia's principal fighter training base and hosts the bulk of the Royal Australian Air Force's F-35A Lightning II fleet, along with E-7A Wedgetail surveillance aircraft, Hawk 127 trainers and Pilatus PC-21 trainers. Newcastle Airport shares the same airfield under an arrangement with the Department of Defence.
According to the outlet that first reported the incursions, several drones were confirmed operating in restricted airspace over the three-day period, and personnel at the base were reportedly told to close window blinds as a precaution against sensitive material being observed or photographed.
No drone was recovered or publicly identified, and the identity or intent of the operators remains unknown. The matter was referred to the New South Wales Police Counter-UAS Unit. Conroy said on August 10 that the police investigation had concluded but did not reveal its results. He also declined to say whether the drone activity affected military or civilian flight operations, or what countermeasures, if any, were deployed. Conroy stated that Australia maintains layered security measures to protect personnel and bases, without providing further detail.
