United to add Airbus A321XLR with redesigned fuel system
United Airlines will take the Airbus A321XLR, an aircraft whose long range required Airbus to rework part of the fuselage and install a dedicated fuel system rather than simply carrying more fuel than an A321neo.
United Airlines is readying the Airbus A321XLR for its fleet, with domestic flights due to start in September and international service from Washington Dulles International Airport to Amsterdam and Dublin beginning December 1, 2026.
According to the source, the jet gives United a way to fly thinner long-haul markets with a single-aisle aircraft. Reaching that range was not a matter of loading extra fuel into an A321neo: Airbus changed a substantial section of the fuselage and built a fuel system specific to the type to make the design work.
