The US Air Force will spend close to $1 billion to rebuild a single base for just 21 F-15EX fighter jets. The cost shows the scale of investment needed to bring airfield infrastructure up to standard for advanced aircraft.
The work forms part of a wider push to upgrade facilities across the United States and the Pacific. The Air Force has set aside about $1.5 billion each for modernization at Ellsworth and Dyess Air Force Bases, home to strategic bombers, plus large sums for Andersen Air Force Base in Guam and airfields on Tinian.
Plans also call for rehabilitation of airstrips on surrounding islands, including Peleliu in Palau. The Air Force has not said which base will receive the nearly $1 billion rebuild for the F-15EX fleet.
