US Army awards Collins Aerospace $472M Chinook avionics deal
The US Army has awarded Collins Aerospace a contract worth up to $472 million to provide engineering services for modernizing and sustaining the CH-47 Chinook helicopter fleet.
The US Army has awarded Collins Aerospace, a unit of RTX, a contract valued at up to $472 million to support the modernization and sustainment of its CH-47 Chinook helicopter fleet. The agreement covers engineering services focused on avionics upgrades intended to help the Army integrate new capabilities, address aging onboard systems, and reinforce the aircraft's overall avionics architecture as operational requirements change over time.
According to Collins Aerospace, the work will center on cockpit systems that combine communication, navigation, and mission-related subsystems into an interoperable platform designed to meet current operational demands. A company executive described the effort as an extension of a long-running avionics partnership with the Army meant to keep the Chinook fleet aligned with evolving service member and mission needs.
The company said the contract also has implications beyond the Chinook program specifically, as it is meant to promote more standardized avionics architecture across the Army's wider aviation fleet. By developing open and reusable systems that can be applied to multiple aircraft types, the initiative is intended to make future technology integration simpler and potentially reduce cost and scheduling burdens as broader modernization efforts continue.
Work under the contract is expected to be carried out at facilities in Huntsville, Alabama, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. No additional financial or scheduling details beyond the contract's maximum value were disclosed.
