Why the Airbus A380 uses reverse thrust on only two of its four engines

The Airbus A380, the largest passenger aircraft in commercial service, is fitted with thrust reversers on only its two inboard engines, numbers 2 and 3. The outboard engines, mounted near the tips of the jet's 80-meter wingspan, do not reverse thrust after landing.
According to the explanation given, the placement of the outer engines close to the runway's edge makes them more likely to pull in gravel, dirt and other loose debris from unpaved margins. This raises the risk of foreign object damage, or FOD, to the engines themselves as well as to the wings and fuselage.
By limiting reverse thrust capability to the inboard pair, Airbus reduces that exposure while still providing sufficient stopping power during landing roll. The two inner engines sit closer to the fuselage centerline, away from the runway shoulders, making them less prone to ingesting debris when operated in reverse.
The arrangement reflects a broader design trade-off common on large multi-engine aircraft, balancing braking performance against the mechanical complexity and weight of adding reversers to every engine. Full reverse thrust on all four engines would add extra weight and maintenance requirements without a proportional benefit, given that modern braking systems and spoilers already handle much of the deceleration workload after touchdown.
No incident or safety event prompted the explanation; it addresses a long-standing design feature of the A380 rather than a new development.
