Synopsis

B737-800 flight crew reported the number 1 engine failed during takeoff resulting in an immediate return to the departure airport.

Narrative

Bang at about 2;200 ft. on departure. Noticed #1 indications winding down; but no initial indication that we noticed of severe damage or fire. [Requested priority handling]. Completed Engine Failure Checklist; and decided safest action was NOT to restart engine. Computed performance numbers and determined plenty of stopping margin despite rain and overweight aircraft. Good FA and ATC communication throughout. Uneventful landing and rollout. Stopped on Runway XXR for fire department to check aircraft. Brake cooling module required 70 minutes to cool down so cleared runway and waited. Uneventful taxi to gate.

Second reporter narrative

Engine start; taxi and takeoff were uneventful. About 2;200 ft.; felt a thump; bang and slight roll to the left. Thought we hit a bird. I was still flying aircraft by hand; powered up #2 Engine and continued climb to 3;000 ft. and leveled off. Looked at engine instruments; #1 Engine rolled back and displayed ENG FAIL light. No fire; no vibration; no seizure; and we had N1. [Requested priority handling]; completed Engine Failure Checklist and Single Engine Landing Checklist. ACARSed Dispatch; briefed Flight Attendants and the Passengers. ATC vectored us around for ILS XXR approach. Stopped on runway; emergency crews met aircraft and inspected engine. Taxied off runway and sat for 70 minutes to cool brakes. Uneventful taxi to gate. Coordinated engine failure; overweight landing; and brake cooling with Station Operations; Dispatch; Maintenance Control; Chief Pilot; and Dispatch management.
