B757 flight crew reported parking brake malfunction during taxi into gate.
Narrative
Parked Gate ZZZ XX and set parking brake. EICAS advisory PARKING BRAKE verified and pressure normal. Aircraft started moving. Stopped aircraft and re-set parking brake again. Verified EICAS advisory PARKING BRAKE and pressure normal. Aircraft started moving again. Third time pulled parking brake handle extremely hard and it held. Ground Crew verified that they saw the parking brake set as well. Shut aircraft engines down. Aircraft pushed back by tug 2-3 ft. and parking brake set with EICAS advisory PARKING BRAKE and pressure normal. Verified no aircraft movement and chocks placed before turning off seat belt sign and de-planing.
Second reporter narrative
I am documenting what I saw as a commuting jumpseater pilot. I was seated as 1 of 2 jumpseat pilots inside the cockpit of this flight; occupying the seat behind the Captain. Everything was uneventful taxiing into Gate XX. I witnessed normal marshaller hand signals up to and including the stop signal; after which I observed the Captain set the parking brake and both the Captain (CA) and First Officer (FO) wait for the PARKING BRAKE EICAS to appear. At this point; I got out of my seat to stretch my legs. The engines were not yet shut down nor the seat belt sign turned off. When I looked out the side window; I noticed the jet bridge moving outside of the window; but also noticed the ground moving. I immediately said hey we're still moving; and then felt the airplane jolt as it came to a sudden stop. I looked out front and saw the Marshaller indicating an X; with the wands and the Captain releasing; then reapplying; the parking brake lever. After this; I saw them remove foot pressure from the brake pedals and the plane began to move forward again. They reapplied pedal pressure; reconfirmed the parking brake lever still set; with the PARKING BRAKE message displayed. I suggested just holding pressure on the pedals until the plane was chocked. While doing so; the engines were shut down and seat belt sign turned off. Captain signaled the Marshaller to get on interphone to communicate the parking brake failure and I heard over the speaker that the Marshaller saw the parking brake set and the airplane still moved. I presume by this that the Marshaller meant they saw the parking brake light illuminate on the nose gear strut. My perception of total distance of uncommanded movement is about 10 ft the first time and 2-3 ft the second time. We thought the airplane may have to be pushed back with a tug; but it appeared the jet bridge was still able to make proper positioning with Door 2L without further aircraft movement. We also verified the brake pressure gage was in normal range. The Captain called Maintenance via radio to report the defect and submitted a logbook entry via ACARS. After seeing this I gave my contact info to the Captain and left the aircraft.
