CRJ900 flight crew reported they misidentified a fix resulting in descending below published altitude and a CFTT event.

Synopsis

Narrative

Flying into ZZZ on visual XX; I used the RNAV XX as a backup. I mistook ZZZZZ for the final approach fix. As a result; I was closer and lower than I intended to be. I referenced terrain mode on my side; but the outside picture didn't look right. Once I realized my mistake; I executed a go around. Pilot error. Mixed up ZZZZZ1 and ZZZZZ. A more thorough brief would have helped. Even though it was a visual; had I been more specific about my plan; the First Officer likely would have caught my error.

Second reporter narrative

Captain Pilot Flying; First Officer; Pilot Monitoring. We were cleared for the visual for Runway XX into ZZZ. Captain mixed up final approach fixes causing us to be lower than we wanted maneuvering for final. Go around was executed and approach was shot again. Captain was low on final due to mix up of final approach fix and another fix.
